When we run, our body weight is multiplied by as much as three times; and our feet, knees, hips and back can bear the brunt of every stride (Over 600 times per km per foot). Clearly running is very repetitive, and the impact of poorly fitted, inappropriate footwear will be magnified, increasing the potential for overuse injury. In fact, during a typical day our feet can endure a cumulative force of several hundred tons. At ShoeLogic our free video treadmill analysis will ensure correct fit and help reduce the risk of running related injury.

TRAIL SHOES
Trail shoes are a category of running shoes which have recently enjoyed increased popularity, especially with the emergence of off road triathlon. Trail running offers unique demands on both the athlete and the shoe, in particular the ability to adapt to an uneven, loose, and sometimes slippery surface.

A conventional running shoe is a poor choice if you are running exclusively off road. Standard running shoes will lack the external traction and often contribute to soft tissue injury due to 'bracing' on slippery surfaces. Other features unique to purpose built trail shoes are water resistant uppers, different fastening systems, lower profile mid-soles and equal medial and lateral support.

At Shoe Logic, we pick the eyes out of the trail shoe category and only stock what we consider to be the best product for our customers.
CHILDREN'S RUNNING SHOES
A large amount of my time as a Podiatrist has been spent dealing with children's foot problems. Mums and dads often present with juniors with everything from warts to ingrown nails, foot and lower limb pain, flat feet, intoeing and tripping. Sometimes intervention is required, by way of stretching, modification of activity, orthotic support, tape, ice or further referral.

More often than not, assessment of a child's footwear is an important consideration: - Is it suitable for the child's sport?
- Does it fit length and width?/
- Do the shoe characteristics match the requirements of the foot type?
- Does it compliment any adjunct therapy such as orthotic therapy?

High quality children's running shoes are available these days. Many are made to similar standards of the comparable adult shoe, but with a lower price point.

It is a real challenge to fit a children's shoe, as a vigorous growth spurt can see a well fitting shoe being too small from one month to the next. I can understand parents buying shoes that are too big with the obvious issue of cost in mind, but an overly large shoe will not bend underneath the metatarsal heads or support the foot as it should. This can lead to secondary problems from poor stability and clumsiness.

Conversely, shoes that are too short can pressure toes that are still forming, and lead to long term digital deformity. That said, I would always prefer to see a child in a shoe which is slightly large than too short - but anything beyond an adults thumb width is considered excessive. When buying shoes, also check for a snug fit around the heel arch and forefoot. You should not see obvious pinching or gaping. Whilst it may be expensive to regularly change footwear, it is a less painful option both physically and financially than dealing with the problems of poorly fitting shoes.
CLEANING YOUR RUNNING SHOES
- Do not clean shoes in a washing machine or dry them in a clothes dryer
- Clean with a soft brush, soapy warm water and rinse thoroughly
- Do not immerse in water
- Stuff with newspaper and dry slowly and room temperature
WHAT TO SPEND
Sure, you need to buy quality running shoes, but just going for the most expensive can be a big mistake. The same pair of runners can be ideal for one person and a total waste of money for another. At Shoe Logic we focus on selecting the right shoe for the right foot type and activity.
